Ekg Test

An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a test that checks for problems with the electrical activity of your heart. An EKG translates the heart’s electrical activity into line tracings on paper. The spikes and dips in the line tracings are called waves.

EKG Test Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is done to:

  • Check the heart’s electrical activity
  • Find the cause of unexplained chest pain, which could be caused by a heart attack, inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart (pericarditis), or angina
  • Find the cause of symptoms of heart disease, such as shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, or rapid, irregular heartbeats (palpitations)
  • Find out if the walls of the heart chambers are too thick (hypertrophied)
  • Check how well medicines are working and whether they are causing side effects that affect the heart
  • Check how well mechanical devices that are implanted in the heart, such as pacemakers, are working to control a normal heartbeat
  • Check the health of the heart when other diseases or conditions are present, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, diabetes, or a family history of early heart disease

HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

An ECG or EKG test is usually done by a health professional, and the resulting EKG is interpreted by a doctor, such as an internist, family medicine doctor, electrophysiologist, cardiologist, anesthesiologist, or surgeon.

You may receive an EKG as part of a physical examination at your health professional’s office or during a series of tests at a hospital or clinic. EKG equipment is often portable, so the test can be done almost anywhere. If you are in the hospital, your heart may be continuously monitored by an EKG system; this process is called telemetry.

DURING AN EKG:

  • The patient will lie on a bed or table. Areas on your arms, legs, and chest where small metal discs (electrodes) will be placed are cleaned and may be shaved to provide a clean, smooth surface to attach the electrode discs. A special EKG paste or small pads soaked in alcohol may be placed between the electrodes and the patient’s skin to improve the conduction of the electrical impulses, but in many cases, disposable electrodes are used that do not require paste or alcohol.
  • Several electrodes are attached to the skin on each arm, each leg, and on your chest. These are hooked to a machine that traces your heart activity onto a paper. If an older machine is used, the electrodes may be moved at different times during the test to measure your heart’s electrical activity from different locations on your chest. After the procedure, the electrode paste is wiped off.
  • The patient will be asked to lie very still and breathe normally during the test. Sometimes the patient may be asked to hold their breath. The patient should not talk during the test.
  • At JustWell Health Group, we want to take the time to listen, find the answers and provide our patients with the best care.

Gerardo C. Perez, D.O

Doctor

Born in Cuba, Dr. Perez immigrated to the United States as a young boy, settling in New Jersey with his family. He attended Long Island University and earned a Bachelor of Science, while majoring in both Biology and Chemistry. In 1984, Dr. Perez graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed his family practice residency at Southeastern Medical Center in Miami and received his board certification in Family Medicine. Shortly after starting his private practice in 1987, Dr. Perez qualified and passed his Geriatric Board exam, an area of medicine that had always interested him and one that he felt was under-represented in the community. His interest in treating the older patient population stems from the extensive size of his family and the many experiences he had as a young man with his older relatives.

For the past 30 years, Dr. Perez has proudly served the Hialeah-Miami Lakes community with the best quality and personal care available. His approach remains the same, “Keep it simple, and don’t over medicate.” He is a strong believer in preventative care and feels that nutrition and exercise are the best forms of medication. He tries to set an example for his patients in the way he cares for his own health.

Dr. Perez has been married to his wife Madeline for 27 years and has three sons, whom he credits for keeping him young and on his toes. Dr. Perez has coached travel baseball for many years, loves to landscape and is a culinarian. His latest interest, and one that he says stimulates him both physically and mentally, is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

She is responsible for processing their insurance information, obtaining medical records when needed and making sure their medications are requested and filled.

As the Medical Assistant, she assists Dr. Perez with their patient’s vitals, handles all EKG’s and X-rays, but more importantly, she has mastered the art of phlebotomy, aka drawing blood, and is able to administer other doctor approved injections. Jenniffer is also responsible for contacting her patients with their lab and radiology appointments, as well as entering and maintaining up-to-date data on all patient demographics in the office’s medical records system. She also maintains all the office supplies and equipment that is needed to for patient care.

Jenniffer has been married for over 14 years. She has three children and one grandbaby. When she is not in the office, Jenniffer says running is her favorite daily cardio. She absolutely loves the ocean and enjoys boating and traveling to different islands.
